How to Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 [Step by Step Guide]

Here is a text and video guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using RedSn0w 0.9.9b7.

Step 1:

Download iOS 5.0.1 from our downloads page (you need to be a registered Apple Developer for the firmware to activate).

Step 2:

Open RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 (download here) and select Extras > Select IPSW > and point it to the iOS 5.0.1 firmware.

Step 3:

Go back to the main screen of RedSn0w and click Jailbreak. Then follow these steps:

a. Hold down the power button for 3 seconds
b. Continue holding the power button and then start holding the home button at the same time. HOLD BOTH for 10 seconds
c. Let go of the power button and continue holding home button for 20 seconds

Step 4:

You will get the white Cydia icon, here is how to fix that.

 

Congratulations, you are now jailbroken on the new iOS 5.0.1 firmware!

    I follow the step and whe I open Redsnow and select IPSW file tells me that the IPSW is not supported redsnow version. what can i do?

      your suppose to ungrade to 5.01 because this jalbreak is for that version plus the ipsw is 5.0 it worked on my windows computer.

    Your redsn0w_win_0.9.9b8 program can’t recognize dmg, and does not support supported iPhone3,1_5.0.1_9A404_Restore.ipsw.

      hey bro, i figured out all of the problems, and there the same with yours, the DMG. file open it and it will open an installer and then it will configure the DMG file to a ipsw file just like the guy has on the video, i just did that to mine, very easy! hope this helps!

    i downlaoded all the downloads and when i went to red snow i typed up i typed up in the ipsw selectoin part and typed up ios 5,0.1 redsnnow said that it was not supported to this versoin of redsnow so i typed up ipod4,1….A404 then itried again but typed up ipos4,1……a405 and still said the same thing i tryied all of your downloads none of them work

    I am having the same problems that everyone else is having. I used the RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 like the video stated and get the same response. Also tried the same thing with the two different Iphone 4 links. How am I supposed to know which Iphone 4 link I am supposed to download and use? But it looks like either way it does not matter because I used both links and both give me the same answer. Please help me.

    I think I know why the jailbreak is not working for us… If you check your version it will say 5.0.1 (9A405) The version these jailbreaks are for reflect the (9A404) or (9A402) If that is the case then can you please put a jail break for that version.

    Guys, I figured it out.. The problem is that you are using the 5.0.1 firmware with the redsn0w 0.9.9b8… Instead download the 5.0 and use it with the latest redsn0w.. The steps are all the same as in the video.

      if you have 5.0.1 in your iphone use redsnow 0.9.9b8 but when you click select ipsw files select the ios5.0 and that should work

        When using the redsn0w app even if you have version 5.0.1 on your phone you still want to select the 5.0 firmware and then it will ask you if you have a new or old bootroom. I selected no and then everything worked except cydia keeps crashing and won’t open. any ideas??

      look for a 5.0 which will let you downgrade to it
      this sites 5.0 will not work
      once you have the 5.0 installed then the redsnow0.0.09b8 or 0.9.9b7 should work for a semi tether jailbreak

        I had the same problem, and the problem is that jailbreak for ios 5.0.1 is NOT out yet, so you have to go to this link: http://www.dailyifix.com/downloads/
        and then scroll down to ios 5. Click your type of iDevice. It will download and when it does, go to redsnOw and click ‘select ispw’ and then pick the ios 5.0. (the one you just downloaded) not the ios 5.0.1. and it should work from there. Hope I helped!

      redsn0w 0.9.9b8 only supports versions of iOS up to 5.0.1b2. It does not support the final iOS 5.0.1 (9A405).

      what i did is when i start using redsnow go to where it say ipod firmware and it will downgrade to that then do the jailbreak and it will work after it finish the booth go to cydia and go serch and type corona then download so u can re-booth no need a computer good luck

      when you jailbreak with 5.0 iOS in real is the iOS 5.0.1 version.
      After the jailbreak will see the version.
      And for booting Ive try’ed like 10 times to get success. SO be patient

        Well for cydia all you have to do is go back to DFU mode then from the redsn0w open in extras the 5.0 iOS Then select boot device.
        Then you are ready :)

      its the iOS 5.0.1 but when you jailbreak your iPhone need some files from any iOS to go ahead in next steps. So your iPhone keeps the old version of your iOS have ready installed.
      So that means if you had iOS 5.0 redsn0w jailbreak in iOS 5.0 but if you have the latest version of iOS 5.0.1 trhen redsn0w jailbreak in iOS 5.0.1.

    I’ve just stupidly upgraded my iOS to 5.0.1

    I’ve downloaded 0.9.9b8 as stated as well as the IPSW which ends 9A405.
    But when I clicked onto Redsnow, it stated that the IPSW is not supported.

    So I tried to use the IPSW ending with 9A334, but after I clicked on “JUST BOOT” it states that the build is incorrect.

    Am at a loss now, coz my iPAD1 is just like a new device with everything gone.

    Please help

      you have to try reboot many times.
      with my iPhone i did successfully reboot after 10 try’s.
      I think its some bugg with the time to enter to a DFU mode.
      Try to push more time than 10 sec home button for enter DFU mode.

      this is important YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD iOS 5.0 from links upper then go to redsn0w –> extras –> and select IPSW iOS 5.0 from the folder you downloaded before.
      After you done Jailbreak, close redsn0w. Open it again go back to –> extras –> select IPSW and then upper select just boot.
      Go to DFU mode and after your device start you DONE.
      I jailbreak my iPhone only for GPS. i won’t pay for that sh1t 200$.

    Yes Finnaly got to get the ipsw recognized but if i boot it then start up my ipod after a while i open cydia and everything but CYDIA,CAMERA,APP STORE, ITUNES etc.

    After two days trying It work for me, i downloaded redsn0w 9.9b8 and ipsw 5.0. redsn0w recognized the ipsw. After installed the ipsw it will boot up, apple logo and then the waiting cicle, this is the tricky part after the apple logo appears and the waiting cicle all you have to do is reboot the phone one again thru redsn0w, just open redsn0w go to select ipsw and the reboot the iphone one again, after that you will get the pineapple logo and all you have to do is wait. It work fo me on my 3GS…

    Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 will not work with IPSW 5.0.1, you guys need to download the 5.0.

    Redsnow 0.9.9b8 select IPSW 5.0 then go back and jailbrake it will go to the same process, you will get all the letters then apple logo and finally it will stuck on the black screen with the little circle, after you see this. Open one again Redsnow 0.9.9b8 select IPSW 5.0 and select Just Boot, that how it work for me and I’m running my 3gs with 5.0.1 firmware.. and running Snow Leopard..

      While spinning wheel freezes up then, open again redsnow 9.9b8 select the IPSW and select Just Boot, after that you should get the pineapple and wait.

      It just means your iPod Touch is bricked. I think the solutions are to hold Home and the Sleep Button at the same time until something happens (I forget what) or plug it into your computer and Restore Settings.

      use the redsn0w just boot mode in extras, you have to do that every time it restarts.. you can still respring though without having to do that.. but if it says reboot device or it dies you have to use redsn0w to boot it again.

    Hey I just recently updated my iPod touch 4G from 4.1 to 5.0.1 and jailbroke my iPod.
    After jailbreaking my device, my Cydia icon is blank/white with 11 updates.
    When I tap on the icon, a small pop up shows up and goes back to my springboard immediately.

    So I tried jailbreaking my device just to have the same results. This is weird because before I updated my device to 5.0.1, the Cydia icon was blank with 11 update notifications, since I didn’t update my Cydia apps for a while and I deleted springboard theme so it was blank.

    Care to help me out with my problem?

    So I was successfully able to jailbreak my device, but however, every time I unlock my device, the springboard goes on safemode.

    So I tried respringing my iPod only to get the same message over and over again.
    Tired of the same message, I tried rebooting my device and booting tethered through my conputer and I was on safe mode again.

    Can you help me out with this problem, I’d like to use my themes and tweaks for my iPod.

    Hey I have done a successful jailbreak on my iPod touch 3g but I am having trouble with the sources in Cydia. When i click on a source a blank screen pops up where the sources links should be. I also had trouble when I added the source Hackulo.us the same problem happened with the source. I am new at this and have no idea what I am doing if it wasn’t for your video I wouldn’t even have been able to jailbreak my iPod. Please help!

      dont worry about any of the ipsw just download red snow and hit jailbreak and follow instructions and your good to go.

    Hey there….so I found a iPhone 4 (from Verizon) and it was locked so i restored the whole thing and updated to 5.0.1.then when it was updated i came to the part were I had to activate the phone in order for the phone to work properly (which I haver yet activated it) so I found this process in YouTube were its says to dial 112 and do this other thing in order to bypass the activation screen (which it did worked) but every time I locked the phone or it accidently gets locked I have to do the same process over again to bypass the screen. SO my question is if there’s any way to bypass the activation screen without having to do the same proccess of dialing 112 and the other steps every time the phone locks!? (also if I jailbreak the iPhone would it help to bypass the activation screen?)

    Im using the newer version of Redsn0w 9.10… and i am using the 5.0.1 ipsw from the download link above… but when i try to jail break it lets me select the option Cydia and then it gets stuck on WAITING FOR REBOOT.

      Its probaply in DFU mode i thought the same thing try the steps again but after you let go of home button press power until you see the apple sign

      NVM on my last post i was using wrong RedSn0w now i have the same problem as everyone else Ispw is not supported by this version of RedSn0w and the the fingerprint thing

    Hey man thanks for the tutorial. My problem is that every time i try to use the redsn0w i get up to “waiting for reboot” stage.     Im using the redsn0w program and all, and i put it in DFU mode(i think thats what it’s called) and now it wont reboot. Im not sure if it’s just taking a superrr long time or it just wont work.

    Hi, I had my iPhone jailbroken and Cydia asked me to download some updates. I did but then i did not have signal. So i choosed to update it through iTunes but it stucks at “preparing iPhone for restore” same happens if i go for restore.
